Brazilian Variant Spurs New Surges

The SARS-CoV-2 variant from Brazil, a more aggressive mutation of the virus, is causing COVID-19 surges in many areas of North and South America. While vaccinations are increasing here at home, we continue to see growing waves of infection in states across the country. Our partner countries of Bolivia and Paraguay both share expansive borders with Brazil, and there the situation is even more alarming.

The Pan American Health Organization reports

The pandemic is particularly dire in South America, where infection is reported to be spiking in Chile, Paraguay and Uruguay. “In Paraguay, a majority of ICU beds are occupied, and the health system is buckling under the pressure,” Dr. Etienne said.

“The virus continues to surge dangerously across Brazil,” she continued. “Cases and deaths are increasing, and ICU bed occupancy is very high in many states… Bolivia has reported an increase in cases in the Pando department, while “ICU bed occupancy remains very high in Loreto, Peru.”

In the face of this ongoing crisis, we remain committed to the common good: a just and equitable distribution of lifesaving medical innovations, and protecting others by wearing masks, social distancing, and receiving vaccines when they are available to us.

Please join us in the reflection and prayer below, adapted from the Catholic Health Association

Let us reflect on the obstacles that make our striving for the common good in our institutions and in our society more difficult:

  • The sort of individualism that values my individual freedom and personal rights over the needs of us all.

  • Those forms of pluralism that make it impossible for us to agree on the kind of society or institution we will all pitch in to support.

  • The unwillingness to sacrifice for others, especially the poor, the marginalized, and the vulnerable.

  • Forms of suspicion that break down solidarity and collaboration.

  • Wanting the benefits that the common good provides while refusing to do our part to support the common good.

Let us remember that all are the beloved daughters and sons of the God who loves all his children and always desires what is good for them. Give us strength when we falter in our commitment to others. We ask this as we pray:

O God, you have given all people one common origin and desire to gather them into one family for yourself. Fill our hearts with the fire of your love and kindle in us a desire to ensure the common good for all our sisters and brothers. By sharing with one another, may we secure justice for all people, an end to division and a society built on justice, love and peace.

Amen.
