MEDICAL NEED IN BOLIVIA The most pressing medical need in Bolivia today is for the technology, equipment, and supplies found in the developed world. In the U.S. we take for granted that medical care of the latest technology fills our hospitals. In Bolivia, medical personnel reuse until they disintegrate, simple things U.S. doctors and nurses throw away. Technically advanced equipment and supplies are not available except to the very richest of Bolivians. Even then, most wealthy Bolivians must travel to other countries to receive the most advanced care. Up to date equipment is simply not available to most Bolivians in need. For example, our neurosurgical colleagues were using regular construction drills for brain surgery before we equipped them with real neurosurgery drills. MEDICAL SUPPLIES PROGRAM Solidarity Bridge has delivered over $9 million worth of medical supplies, equipment and medicines to improve and save the lives of the Bolivian poor. Our deliveries include everything from surgical gloves to heart valves to neuromicroscopes. Unlike many other non-profits, we base our deliveries not on what we think the Bolivians need but on advice and requests from Bolivian medical personnel. Our work is done in close partnership with U.S. medical supply companies and hospitals who generous donate their products. Every expensive piece of equipment and supplies are carefully tracked and documented to ensure they serve the poorest of the poor. |
