Summer Education Mission

The Education Mission is a partnership in Cochabamba, Bolivia with teachers and student teachers preparing to teach English to the poor. Our principal institutional partner is a large public institution for higher learning called Universidad San Simon. Our missioners provide seminars, team teach and sharpen their Spanish skills while delving into Latin American culture. The Bolivian teachers have an opportunity to learn more English and connect with counterparts from the U.S. Sharing includes topics of a pedagogical and curricular nature. This mission occurs in the summer months.

Our goals on mission are to:

  • Improve the English skills of Bolivian counterparts who teach English in schools for the poor
  • Depending on the expertise of our missioners, provide workshops on educational topics to our Bolivian counterparts
  • Deepen missioners' knowledge and understanding of Latin American culture
  • Learn how another culture’s educational vision and practice is realized in Bolivian schools
  • Create bonds of solidarity with Bolivian educational counterparts and experience community with team members
  • Grow through cultural, educational, and spiritual exchange
  • And much more…

Medical Education

In addition to the teaching happening in the interactions with hospital personnel in the operating room on medical missions, we incorporate workshops and seminars for our Bolivian colleagues on the latest medical techniques and practices. For example, on the spring 2005 medical mission one of our anesthesiologists, Dr. George Lederhaas, provided a series of lectures on pediatric anesthesia and pain management to the Bolivian Anesthesiology Association. His lectures were attended by over 45 physicians. Dr. Robert Klobucnik, our emergency room physician, engaged the Hospital Cuschieri staff in a process of assessing and developing their emergency room procedures and equipment.
